Steps for planning an extension
1: Do your research
Talk to a local agent before you start planning an extension. Find out what improvements are popular in your area. It’s not worth spending money on an expensive extension that will not break through the price ceiling for your area.
2: Permission
You can build an 8-metre-long single-storey addition to your home without a planning permit. Double height in your plans? You can then extend your home by three metres. You can extend to the side, but it cannot be higher than 4 metres or wider than the footprint of your existing home.
3: Building Regulations
Building regulations are mandatory, regardless of whether you have planning permission. They cover things like drainage, fire safety, and insulation.
4: Find an architect
You’ll need an architect if you want to add more living space or create something special. You can contact professional bodies to find one.
5: Find a builder
If you want to reduce costs, it’s possible to manage your project yourself. However, managing each tradesman can be difficult, especially if you have a full-time career. You can use a design-and-build company to get the job done on time and within budget. You can check out the work yourself or ask for personal recommendations. 6: Move out
If the construction is expected to have a high impact, it’s best to leave during the most disruptive times. Book accommodation in your area if you do not have family or friends nearby.
