Make Sure You Do Your Homework Before Towing a Caravan
A caravan is a great thing to have – whether you want to explore the UK or take it further afield and travel around Europe, it gives you the freedom to be able to do this with ease.
If you have never owned and towed a caravan before, you should spend some time familiarising yourself with the laws around caravans and towing to make sure that you are going to be using it legally and safely.
Here are some of the main things to consider…
Check with your Insurer – Some insurance policies automatically cover you when you are towing but not all do, so before you tow anything, you should check what you are covered for with your insurer.
Complete a Towing Course – Although it is not always required by law, if you have not towed before it is definitely advisable that you complete a towing course. As well as familiarising you with towing on the road, towing courses also help you to get to grips with manoeuvring and also coupling and uncoupling the trailer.
Make sure it is Roadworthy – Anything on the road needs to be safe and roadworthy. Always keep an eye on the caravan and check that it doesn’t have any faults that could be an issue to safety. Some things are easy enough to repair and you can do it yourself, you can buy trailer parts from auto and trailer for example, but in some cases you should get it checked by a professional.
